How to Organize Kitchen Cupboards & Leftovers

I have been on a continual journey to figure out how to best organize my kitchen ever since we moved into our little town house. It is a small kitchen so I have had to get creative about how to store things and be careful about not storing things that we don't use very often. (Things we don't use very frequently tend to end up either donated or down in the basement- and that is a problem for another blog post!)

Today I'm sharing how I organize our container cupboard. It has taken a lot of thought and reorganization to find a system that works, but I'm happy to say I have found a great way to organize it (and I even know where to put (& find) each lid!)  You can see in the photo below that all of my lids aren't together, but they are all in a place that makes sense to me!

- Some lids stack with their containers
- Some lids fit on their side, beside their containers
- Some lids fit in a lid rack on the cupboard door
- Some lids fit best on their container
(in the case of the pitchers & the glass containers on the bottom shelf)

I'm pretty happy with the collection of bowls and other containers that I have gathered over the last decade, but the one problem I have been trying to solve is finding storage containers that I can use for leftovers.  I have tried a few different types and they have all fallen short for different reasons. Through trial and error, I have determined the following wishlist for food storage containers:

- clear (so I can see what's inside)
- easy to stack (for storage purposes)
- lids stack or store without taking much space
- containers stack on each other in fridge
- can be used in as many ways as possible (freezer, dishwasher, microwave)

I think I found our solution in Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids and I'm very happy with how well they fit in my cupboard AND my fridge!  You can see them in my cupboard in the top, left corner of the photo above. The smaller sizes do stack easily inside of the larger sizes (I have mine in more than one stack because I don't have much height on that shelf).  Here they are in the fridge:

I love that they stack so nicely on top of each other and I know exactly what's inside of them! I know I'm not the only one who dreads opening that opaque container that's just been discovered at the back of the fridge, for fear of what might be inside and what might be growing on it! It's so much easier to keep track of what's in the fridge when you can see what's in the containers at a glance.

As for storage, the lids actually snap together- to each other, and to the bottom of the containers.

I'm pretty happy with this find- they allowed me to check everything off of my list!  I'm pretty excited about being able to store things in the freezer with these too!

I hope this post gave you some ideas of some different ways to store containers and lids that might help you with the organization of your container cupboard!

Do you have any other tips or tricks that you use to keep your cupboards organized?
I'd love to hear about them in the comments!

  1. I have a love hate relationship with tupperware. I love it for storage of leftovers, but HATE trying to find the match lid and keeping the stack neat and tidy! I really need this!

  4. I love your storage idea on the cupboard door for the lids. I will have to give that a try. The rubbermaid containers look great- always having a lid for the container I want to use would save me so much time!

  5. I'm planning on using an old dish rack to store pan lids in my cupboard a huge pet hate of mine as I can never find the correct sized lid when cooking!

  6. I really like this system, I have a couple sets and it does help keep me organized (when my husband doesn't just chuck them in the door). I need to tackle this cupboard today.

  7. We have those same Rubbermaid containers, but we just throw all of our leftovers containers in a box. We moved less than a year ago, and we have yet to figure out a place for storage containers, and it's been driving me crazy. Thanks for the ideas!
