Let's Get Kids Reading - The Awesome Project!

Reading has always been big with our family.  We read a lot throughout a typical day!  We read scriptures in the morning at breakfast, the girls read to us after school for their "Home Reading" program, and one of us reads a story to them at night.  We also love to visit the library!  That has always been a fun activity that I like to do with my kids. We love to choose books to read together whether just for entertainment or for learning. I think reading together is a huge part of teaching your children how to learn!

I found this picture from a few years ago- they're such munchkins! It's so fun when one can read to the other. :)

It is so exciting to teach them about letters and sounds and then to move on to sounding out words and then (seemingly all of a sudden), they are really reading! Talia has been reading well for quite a while and over the past year or so, I have been amazed to watch Katrina become a very proficient reader.  It's so cool to see them grow in that way!

The Awesome Project

I think it's important for every child to have the opportunity to foster a love of reading. So, I'm excited about "The Awesome Project", a literacy initiative that will provide elementary school-aged children with their very own first book!

Author Neil Pasricha, whose "Awesome" book series has sold in the millions visited students across Southern Ontario to read from Awesome is Everywhere (his latest book for children) in October. Also, each school received copies of the book in addition to 1,500 new books and a $1,000 grant to purchase books and Kobo eReaders through the First Book Canada Marketplace!

How Can You Be Involved?

Each time a new customer in Canada buys their first digital book from Kobo until November 30th, Kobo will donate $5 to First Book Canada.  Each new Kobo customer (who signs up through this link & purchases a book before Nov.30th) will also receive a $5 credit that will be applied to their first eBook purchase!

How do you encourage reading at your house?

  2. What a wonderful initiative!! Reading is so important and so fun! I have found that by explaining to my girls that books have adventures waiting to be read has really encouraged them to embrace reading. :)

  3. What a great program! I love to see stuff like this going on in schools and I love to hear how much reading is promoted at home. I think that's the first frontier for all things reading. I have read to my kids since they were in utero and I read all the time, too. I think it's really important to model reading to kids. I have a Kobo and have already signed up as a user or else I would definitely find a book to buy to support this initiative. One thing I've noticed since getting my Kobo, my kids don't think I'm reading as much as I used to. LOL! My oldest told me she thought I was playing on a very small tablet. So, I've gone back to reading books when my kids are around, and after they go to bed at night, I break out my Kobo. So funny the way kids perceive things.

  6. Very cool! I encourage reading in our house by buying a wide variety of books in topics that interest my son....even if I think they look terrible. We have everything from space books to Captain Underpants. I don't care as long as he is reading!

  7. We read every night before bed. It's a little ritual that I look forward to at night and I love how involved my toddler is.
