Q&A - Blogging

Recently I put out a survey for you to fill out and a few of you asked me some questions in that survey, so I thought I would do a video answering some of them.  I've included the video as well as the answers so you can read or watch- whichever you prefer.

If you have any other questions for me (about anything!) please leave them in the comments or shoot me an email here: RaisingMemories(at)gmail(dot)com

How long have you been blogging?

I started an online journal years and years ago. It wasn’t public. I started a public blog in 2007, focused on my photography. I would post a new post every time I did a photoshoot for someone, giving them a preview of some of the highlights of their session. Then in October of 2009, I started the Raising Memories blog (focused on fun things you can do with your kids). So, I’ve been doing that for 6 years.

Tell me more about why you got started blogging.

My purpose in starting Raising Memories was to try and give myself motivation to do fun things with my kids. I figured that if I had the accountability of posting on the blog regularly about fun things to do with your kids, then I would have to think of fun things to do with my kids! So, that has always been the purpose of Raising Memories.

Do you still enjoy blogging?

Yes, I do. I don’t think I would keep doing it if I didn’t enjoy it anymore. I have taken breaks in the past. I took a month off and I have taken time off or slowed down the frequency of posting, depending on what’s going on in my life and how much time I feel I can devote to it. I’ve gone through periods of time where I have had a regular posting schedule of posting 3 or 4 times per week, and other times when I post once or twice a week (which is more like what’s going on right now).

So, yes, I still enjoy it and am always thinking about what direction I want to take things in, and if I want to try something different (which is why I’ve been trying more video lately- it’s just something I want to try out). I don’t know if I’ll keep doing video for very long but right now it’s just something I want to try out.

How did you grow your blog into a success?

Depending on your definition of what a success is… I’m assuming this question is geared towards the fact that I do things that make money with my blog. When I started blogging, it never occurred to me that very many people would want to look at the blog or that anyone would consider paying me to post about their product or send me their product to review until 2010 when I got an email from an online store that was interested in having me do a review. At the time I was like, “Is this spam? What’s going on- why would they contact me?” I looked into it and found out it wasn’t spam, and I gave it a try! After that, I started to look into sponsored posts more. After that I contacted the owner of an Etsy shop to see if she was interested in working together and I did a review for her. After that I started looking into more options for monetizing and doing sponsored posts and reviews and giveaways and things like that.

So, how did I grow my blog into a success? I just started doing research about how to work with companies and how to get my name out there and get people aware of the fact that my blog existed! Another thing that I did was to become a writer on a popular blog called HowDoesShe. I think that got my name out there as well. I did that for a couple of years until things started to pick up more with my blog and I had to let that go so that I could focus more on my own blog and put my time into other things. I loved writing for them- it was really fun!  I feel like I’m always trying to grow, but that’s how I got into it.

If you have any other questions for me about blogging or anything else that I may have written about before on the blog or something you’re curious about, please leave a comment on this post or send me an email and maybe I’ll answer them in an upcoming video or blog post!

  1. One of the things I love about blogging is that it lets me be creative and explore so many different things! I don't think I'll ever get tired of it, but I can really see why some people burn out. I like your approach based on the needs and pressures of your life.

    1. Thanks Nicole! :) Yeah, I agree. I have always liked it, but there are just some times that I want to spend more or less time on it. :)

  2. this is such a great idea! I love it! I also love your eyebrows..is that weird? It probably is, but they are cute!

  3. This is a super idea! People always ask questions about blogging. I love the flexibility, this week I blog more and last week not so much.

  4. I love that your blogging motivation is to do fun things with your kids. As a blogger myself I find 'I need to make a post" can be motivation for everything from getting the front room clean, to actually leaving the house. I sometimes wonder how different my kids lives would be if I didn't blog.

  5. Fun answers! I always like learning more about other bloggers. Like you, I started blogging to inspire myself to do something (write) and not really knowing what it was all about. I've learned as I've gone on and it's so much fun. One of the things I love about blogging is the community - meeting other great bloggers like you and connecting with the moms who read my blog. :) Thanks for sharing!

  6. I always love hearing from other bloggers about how they got started and what they love about the profession. Thx for sharing!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment- I love reading them! :)
