Dream Big, Princess!

Dream Big, Princess!

I love that Katrina has been full of creative ideas and plans lately! From her baking creations to creating dances with her friends, and making her own beads for jewelry, she's been bursting with creative endeavors!  I really want to encourage her to follow and live her dreams- big or small! I sometimes have a tendency to tell myself that some dreams are too big, and I discourage myself from pursuing them because I can't see how they'll become a reality or I just think the likelihood of being disappointed is too high. While trying to change my own habits in that area, I also want to make sure I don't do the same to my kids! Disney has a similar focus right now with their #DreamBigPrincess initiative and I've teamed up with Hasbro to share a bit about that, and some of my thoughts on helping my kids to dream big!

I've written before about how I have been learning to have the courage to dream big. When I wrote about it, I was sharing my experience with a dream that seemed "too big" coming true. I love the quote from Walt Disney that says, "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them," and that's exactly what I want for my girls! I don't want them to be afraid to pursue their big dreams.

If any company is known for encouraging people to dream big, it's Disney. This Fall, as part of their #DreamBigPrincess initiative, (from now until October 11th) a lot of their Disney Princess classic films (like Tangled, Frozen, Cinderella, Pocahontas, etc.) will be airing on all of the major Canadian TV networks – including YTV, The W Network and SRC (French CBC)!

This is a great opportunity to have a movie night in with your family and either introduce your kids to the movies you love, or enjoy them again together. These films all tend to teach about how anything is possible.

About a week ago, we got a special package in the mail from Hasbro. I'm still touched whenever Hasbro works with us because of what they did for us after we lost so much in the smoke. This time, they sent us a pop up palace playset with royal shimmer princess dolls, in celebration of those Disney Princess films (If you keep up with my Instagram stories, you saw Katrina give a tour of the castle ;)

She's pretty pleased with the way that it folds up (and so am I, because it doesn't take up too much space in her room)!

I always look forward to taking advantage of movie nights in with my kids- for the fun we have together and for the opportunity for conversation and learning that comes up because of the content of whatever movie we're watching. Next time you get the chance to have a family movie night, try to pay attention to the topics that come up & ask your kids what they think about them- you may find that it leads into a great discussion!

When it comes to dreaming big, another important thing that I hope to be able to teach my girls (and that I think is very important for adults too) is that although your dreams don't always come true in the way or the time that you want, the important thing is to live and embrace your own story- even when it doesn't quite follow your dream as you imagined!

What do you do to encourage your children to dream big?

    2. This is awesome! I love that these are available on tv. I'm not sure I do anything in particular other than to just continually encourage my daughter. So important.

      1. Yes, sometimes the small, everyday things are the ones that make the most impact. As long as we're aware of that goal to encourage them in this, I think we'll do it!

    3. Ah... we are past the princess stage but I still love to buy them as gifts for my nieces and neighbors. Never to old to dream though, everyone needs to do that.

    6. That's great! I know these Disney films don't show up on TV often, so we've got to jump on the opportunity! Who remembers the old Wonderful World of Disney series?

    7. How absolutely cool! Absolutely love this huge castle - seems like lots of hours of play time and yes - I can't wait to watch as many Disney movies as I can with my kids

    8. I think it is important to encourage our children to dream big. Too often society makes it hard for kids to feel empowered. So I always say if you want something work for it and it will happen.

    16. Since I don't have kids I've only seen a few Disney princess movies - Frozen being my absolute fave (even made my hubby watch it!). I'll have to catch up on Netflix I guess!
