DIY Faux Wood Floating Shelves & Cariloha Bamboo Towels

Here's how I created faux wood floating shelves in our bathroom closet with supplies from the dollar store!

Our new rental townhouse came with a linen closet inside of the upstairs bathroom. I was very happy about this because our townhouse in Utah didn't have any closets (other than the bedroom closets). This closet had white wire mesh shelves and I wasn't too crazy about them. I didn't love the look and I didn't really like that they have holes in them. It just so happened that a budget organizing YouTuber I watch called DoItOnADime published a video on her channel shortly before we moved in, about a hack to make wire shelves look like floating wood shelves! I loved the idea and with just a few dollar store supplies, I thought it was worth a try!

(Update: It's coming up on 2 years since I made these fake floating shelves & they're holding up great!)

I was really happy with the result! If you'd like to try this project yourself, here's what you'll need:

Faux Floating Shelf Supplies

1 roll of faux wood drawer liner per shelf
1 sheet of foam board or foamcore per shelf
packing tape
an X-acto knife
a measuring tape

I started by just buying one roll of drawer liner & one foam board to try it on one shelf to make sure I liked it (I did!) and then I bought the rest of my supplies to finish it off. It cost me $2 per shelf to finish the project and I was quite satisfied with the way they turned out! I would love to have the "real thing" someday when we buy a home, but for now, this will work!

How to Make Faux Floating Shelves

1. Start out by measuring your shelf & the front piece that hangs down in front of the shelf.

2. Cut the foam board into two pieces (one for the shelf top and one for the front that hangs down).

3. Cut the drawer liner to about the size of your pieces (plus extra to wrap around the back) using an X-acto knife & a straight edge (I used another piece of foam core as a guide).

4. Carefully cover your drawer pieces with the wood liner, then hold the front piece in place & tape it on the back with packing tape so that it will hang down in front of the shelf when you place it on your shelf.

5. When you're finished, you just place the shelf "cover" on top of your metal shelf & you're done!

I was able to measure mine so that they fit snugly in place and won't slide around which works great!

You can watch the video if you'd like to see how to do this, step-by-step.

Faux Wood Floating Shelves

Our new bamboo bath towels look so nice in our freshened-up linen closet! We got a new set of bath towels from Cariloha (we needed them very badly!) and it's lovely to have matching towels & a system!

Disclosure: I received towels from Cariloha to try out and to share with you in whatever way I chose. The giveaway prize is sponsored by Cariloha.

Our New Bath Towel System

We bought 2 of the grey Cariloha bath sheet towels for Ken (bath sheets are extra large), 2 blush bath sheets for me, 2 grey bath towels (regular size) for Talia, and 2 blush bath towels for Katrina.  This way we always know which towels belong to which person. We also have just enough towels for everyone- one in use, and one either in the closet or in the wash.

Our new bathroom just has one small bath towel rod, so each person has a hook on the back of their bedroom door where their "in-use" towel stays until they're ready to shower when they bring it into the bathroom & hang it on the rod. This way our bathroom stays uncluttered too!

I had to take the photos of the closet in the lighting of our bathroom which has no natural light, but I wanted to show you how gorgeous these new towels from Cariloha are, in some natural light, so I took this photo:

These are two of their new colours: blush and onyx. They're bamboo towels and are ridiculously soft! I feel like I'm at a spa whenever I shower now! :)

Giveaway

Now that we've tried the towels out for a while & we know how much we love their softness, we've teamed up with Cariloha Bamboo Towels to offer a giveaway for $50 to spend in their online store! (They sell bamboo towels, bedding, & clothing to name a few)  All you have to do to enter is head over to my Instagram (@raisingmemories) and tap on the photo of the towels you see below, double tap to like the photo and leave a comment on the post. I'm excited for one of you to get to try these out!

We've been really happy with both the towels and the dollar store floating shelves! I'm adding this note nearly 2 years later and both have held up beautifully!
