Douglas Hybrid Mattress Review (2026): Foam vs. Hybrid Comparison

We've been excited to review the new Douglas Hybrid mattress (with springs) after our Douglas Mattress Review, back in 2017, when the original Canadian foam bed-in-a-box was released.

What Is the Douglas Hybrid Mattress?

Canada's award-winning, Canadian-made line of mattresses now comes in a hybrid model!  What is a hybrid mattress?  It's a mattress that combines layers of foam with springs.

The Douglas Hybrid mattress comes in 3 tiers (Original, Alpine, & Summit), just like the Douglas foam line and we've been testing out the Douglas Original Hybrid mattress.  It's 12" high, with 4 premium layers and a cooling cover.

Unboxing the Douglas Hybrid: What to Expect

Once our mattress order was finalized, I received an email confirming the order and a second email once the mattress shipped, with tracking information and clear instructions for how to unpack the mattress on arrival.

The box was delivered to our doorstep 7 business days after ordering from Douglas.ca.  The unboxing process is pretty simple:

1. Open the box, tip it over & slide the rolled mattress out
2. Unwrap the outer layer of plastic by hand (this is like a very long, wide piece of plastic wrap)
3. Unroll the mattress, place on your box spring (or bed frame or foundation) and cut & remove the remaining plastic

The mattress will inflate quickly once the plastic seal is broken. We noticed a mild foam odour and that the corners of the mattress were less inflated than the rest of the mattress. The odour fully dissipated and the corners plumped up within 24 hours, but you're able to sleep on the mattress right away.

Douglas Hybrid Mattress Specs & Construction

As a teenager, I worked at our family-owned furniture store. I recall learning all about mattress construction from a mattress company representative who visited the store, and again while visiting the company at a furniture show in Toronto.  We had mini mattress cross-sections on display in our store, showing the differences between coil types:

What is a pocket coil?

Pocket coils are individually wrapped springs encased in fabric sleeves, so they compress independently.  This helps with motion isolation and body contouring compared with traditional "continuous coil" systems made from a single, unbroken piece of wire shaped into rows.  You might remember TV commercials showing pocket coil mattresses with demonstrations like dropping a bowling ball on one side of a mattress and showing that the pins on the other side of the mattress didn't move.

The Douglas Hybrid uses pocketed coils combined with layers of different foams that all contribute to an undisturbed sleep, cooling, and support. I love that they've created 3 zones so the mattress is firmer under hips, softer under shoulders, and reinforced along the edges.

Washable Mattress Cover

You can remove the cover easily with a zipper and wash & dry it in your machine!

Douglas Foam vs Hybrid Mattress

Our Douglas Hybrid Mattress Review

A true medium-firm feel, the Douglas Hybrid mattress is supportive and comfortable. It's recommended for back, side, and combination sleepers, which is perfect for us, because we both tend to switch between side and back.  I have noticed that sleeping on my side is comfortable because there's enough give for my shoulder and also enough support for my waist.

Douglas Hybrid Mattress

We both agree that we have slept comfortably on this mattress from day one.  It has a more springy/bouncy feel than our previous all-foam mattress. We continue to sleep nice and cool, which is great!  We appreciate that the edges are more supported than some foam mattresses we've tried, so you don't slide off while sitting on the edge.

Final Verdict: Is the Douglas Hybrid Mattress Worth It?

If you're looking for a high-quality Canadian mattress with a medium-firm feel, we highly recommend the Douglas Hybrid

What We Love About It:

With our previous foam-only mattress, we found we'd slowly sink into the foam more and more throughout the night, but the springs in the Douglas Hybrid seem to prevent that.  We love the cooler sleep and the extra bounce and responsiveness that come with the hybrid design.

What We Would Improve:

We'd love even firmer edge support, though it's already noticeably sturdier than foam-only mattresses we've tried in the past.

If you've been on the fence about trying a bed-in-a-box, the 365-night sleep trial really does take the risk out of it. We think you'll love it just as much as we do. Shop the Douglas Hybrid Here!
