Mommy-Daughter & Daddy-Daughter Dates

Mommy-Daughter & Daddy-Daughter Dates

Ken and I decided that it was important to us to have Daddy-Daughter and Mommy-Daughter dates with our girls regularly. We sat down with our family calendar and scheduled them about once per month. Each month one of us will take one girl out while the other has an "at-home date" with the other. This has been working really well for us so far and I'm so glad we're doing it!

Talia & I with our Dessert

A couple of months ago, I took Katrina on a swim date. She had been talking about going swimming at a local public pool for quite some time, so we found out when their public swim times were and we made it happen! It was really nice to do that with her and to have that one-on-one time! She practiced her swimming and diving and I helped her out. She came up with her own system for putting her arm up if she felt she needed my help to get above water and it worked really well- we were quite a team! ;) We took a quarter with us to get a treat from the vending machine when we were finished, only to find that the machines had been removed! So, we drove to the closest Walmart and bought a treat there. :)

Most recently, it was my turn to take Talia out on a date, and I took her to Applebee's for dinner (kids eat free on Wednesdays) and dessert. I took her there once before and she really liked it, so requested to go back again this time! I love introducing her to some of my favourite places to eat (food or dessert) and sharing that fun with her! On our way home, we stopped at a few stores and found her some new sandals and pajamas. :) Meanwhile Ken and Katrina had walked to a fast food place near our home for their dinner date. In the evening, Ken shared with me some of the funny conversation they had during their walk. :)

This has been such a fun tradition to start with our kids!

Do you do things like this with your kids?
I'd love to know what your favourite Mommy or Daddy Daughter dates have been!

  1. Ted alternates taking each girl on Daddy-daughter dates each month. The girls love it. They've done things like visiting the library, stopping to get donuts, flying a kite at the park, going to a bookstore, eating out for lunch, etc.

When they were a lot smaller, the dates were shorter. They would stop at the pet store to look at the animals or get an ice cream cone. The alone time with Dad is what's special. :)

  2. That's so cute! We do the same here. My daughter who is 7 and I have a girls day where we go out to eat and do something just the two of us. A movie, the park or whatever we choose. Her and her dad have a date night always on Wednesday nights because I work that night. I love it!

  3. What a lovely tradition! I think it's so great for the kids to have one on one time with each of their parents. It really helps them get to know each other on an even deeper level and makes the kids feel so special.

  4. We don't do this often, but looking back at the times we have - I need to make this habit. It was such a special time for the two of us and he was so excited!

  5. Love this idea and hoping to make it a reality in the near future. As a single mom it's a challenge to find alone time with my boys. Love that idea.

  6. Oooh, that's a fab idea! I guess we do something similar, but haven't termed it as "dates" yet. My 5yo nephew has an incredibly busy social schedule (for someone who is only 5yo!), but we pen in times where Jay and I take him out about town, or swimming, kite-flying, etc. Gonna tell Jay we're taking his nephew out on a date next time, lol! :D
