DIY Emoji Birthday Party

When Talia turned 11, she knew she wanted an Emoji themed birthday party, so we embraced it and came up with several DIY party activities and decorations to create a fabulous tween emoji party! Here's what we did:

Thankfully, Emojis are pretty simple to recreate, artistically! I made a round cake and covered it in homemade buttercream frosting, dyed yellow. I set aside some of the frosting to dye red and some to add cocoa to (to make chocolate flavoured accents).  We went with a kiss face emoji cake and I love the way it turned out!

It's always fun to party plan with the birthday girl involved. Here we are, right before the party started, happy with all of the things we came up with together!

Over our years of kids' party planning, we've found that it's a good idea to have an activity to keep the kids busy while they are waiting for the rest of the guests to arrive. For our emoji party, we bought plain yellow cups and plates and set out markers with a couple of sheets we printed out with examples of different emojis. The girls decorated their dishes, using the printouts for inspiration.

Talia made bracelets for each of her guests and placed them around their cups for them to discover when they sat down.

The girls are lucky to have a grandma who is also a face painter! She has been at many of our birthday parties, expanding her repertoire of face decor ideas to go with our party themes! She has gone along with some of our crazy party ideas, creating face paint masterpieces to go with themes like Lalaloopsy, Mermaids, Princesses, and Animals,

We had a lot of "cool" emojis with shades for the facepaint this time. Here's Talia with her "Gummy" before she left:

The girls played a card game for something fun to do while they took turns getting their faces painted before a pizza lunch (this is what we usually do for birthday party food).

We decorated pretty simply for this party with yellow balloons and yellow & white streamers.

One of our favourite activities to do during a birthday party is to hit a piñata! This is always a bit of a challenge because we have winter birthdays in our family (yep, this post is a bit late!). But we have found ways to make them work anyway!  Here's the emoji piñata we created for this party (it seemed like an appropriate face to choose since it would be getting hit a lot!)

Here are a few photos of the type of prizes we put inside, the girls hitting the piñata (we had some trouble with our stick so we had to change it part way through! That's what's going on with Katrina's face in the bottom, centre photo- her stick broke), and the aftermath!

Overall, it was another successful at-home, DIY birthday party. We're definitely in a grove with throwing kids' birthday parties! (I wonder how things will change as Talia approaches her teen years!)
