Stevie the Bee (A Self Discovery Picture Book for Kids)

Today I want to share a sweet little children's book with you. It's all about a little bee and his struggle to find his place in the world among so many other bees who seemed to have more of a purpose than he.

We were excited when this book came in the mail because we know the author and his family!

Ken & I met Stephen and April when we were all teenagers. Years later, we found ourselves all living in the same city, married and raising young children. Stephen and April are also raising bees (among many other industrious activities) and now Stephen has published this book!

Katrina pointing at the picture of her friends. :)

I love that his story tells an important lesson about self-discovery while also teaching some facts about bees and the way that they live!

Stevie struggles to find his purpose and to figure out what he is good at. He tries some of the things his sisters around him are doing, but finds that he just wasn't made to do those things. He doesn't have the skills or physical characteristics needed to succeed in the way that they do. At first, this is really disappointing for him!  He goes on a grand adventure, eventually discovering something that he can do, and finds joy and purpose in his life.

Some of the messages in the book that I think are important for children as well as parents to hear are:

  • It's okay that you're not good at the same things as other people!
  • Go out there, and find what you love to do!
  • It's good to try new things!

I love the cute, colourful illustrations in the book. Katrina thought it was fun to watch for the lady bug who appears in many of the pictures, and I loved the facial expressions on each of the bees . The book was illustrated by Stephen's mother, Sharon Dunstall.

If this sounds like a book you'd like to have in your collection, you can find Stevie the Bee on Amazon.com as a paperback book or as a download for kindle. (Here's the link for Amazon.ca if you're in Canada)

  2. This is such a great little book, so important for kids to learn that they aren't going to be great at everything and that that is okay! Just keep trying things out and you'll find that one thing you'd be amazing at!

  4. Reminds me of the famous quote... "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

    1. I love that! Such a good quote, and we all need that reminder- funny how we get into that comparison trap, and yet when you read that quote, you realize how silly it is!
