A Mommy Daughter Photography Date

A Mommy Daughter Photography Date

One of the best things I did with Talia this summer was to take her out for a "mommy daughter date" to take photos. I've written before about sharing my favourite hobby with her and I recently told you all about how I've been able to re-embrace my love of photography with a new, lighter camera. Well, now I'm combining both of those!

For our outing, I wanted to introduce Talia to digital photography with a DSLR, so she used one of my older DSLRs and I used my new mirrorless Fuji X-A3.

It was fun to play with my new camera and I loved that I didn't have to deal with any hand pain throughout our time together. The best part about it all though, was seeing Talia get into it! The first photo in this post (above) is one of my favourites.  Talia had gotten low to the ground to photograph this dandelion (below) and I wanted to get a photo of her. She quickly tilted her camera up at me and I love the way that shot turned out!

It makes me so happy to see her enjoying a hobby that I love. I taught her a little about camera settings and the lens she was using. I helped her set her camera so that she'd be working with a shallow depth of field for some artistic photos and it was really fun to see what she came up with!

She even got some portraits of me! (A new profile photo perhaps??)

We took these photos of each other at the same time- she with the DSLR, and me with the Fuji X-A3. We also grabbed a selfie of the two of us to document our mother-daughter photoshoot, with the flip screen on my camera (details on that are in my post about the X-A3 if you want to see what that is).

I can't wait to show Talia the artistic photos she managed to grab on this little excursion! I'm hoping she'll be hooked and excited to get out and do more!

Katrina has been talking about wanting to get out and take photos with me too, so I'll have to plan another mommy daughter photography date with her soon!

When we headed home from this trip, Talia was talking about wanting to get out and take photos in the winter when things are coated with ice. I mentioned that Fall would also be a beautiful time to get out. I'm so excited to not only be re-embracing my love of photography, but to be able to share it with my girls!

I was so proud when she got right down for this shot! :)

  1. I love to take pics with my son. But we use our cell phones. However, I much prefer my DSLR. Hmmm maybe I should get a new one, and give him my old one.:) You've given me a great idea!

  2. Good grief, those are gorgeous photos. What a SUPER FUN mommy-daughter date. I love photographs, but I don't think I'm all that great a photographer. My daughter captures amazing photos with just her iPhone--so maybe we need a mommy-daughter date where she can teach me! :)

  3. My daughter did a week of photography at her camp this year. They gave her a gorgeous Nikon to play with for a week and now she is hooked on taking photos. Now when I hand her my Sony camera she does a better job sometimes than I do. Love that. I will take a close look at the Fuji you mentioned. I wish I understood the mirrorless part people keep talking about. I don't get what that is or why I want it. The photo she took of you is lovely.

  4. What a fun idea. We love doing one on one time with the kids. My 4 year old daughter was acting up last night. We put her to bed early, but after my wife said "I'll make sure to spend some one on one time with her tomorrow."

It totally makes a difference and I love this new idea.

  18. I love taking photos too, my son used to have an interest in it too but has moved on and prefers to draw, but perhaps I can reignite that interest with some time dedicated to going out and just taking pictures

  19. I used to do a lot of photography but I no longer have a good enough camera. Two of my children are both big time photographers these days. My daughter's also taken some courses and they are both taking great photos.
