#Fallmarketplace Demos at Walmart this Weekend!

Today I want to give you some more information about the Fall Marketplace Demos that will be happening at Walmart (in Canada) this week.



If you visit the Fall Marketplace Event at your local Walmart, you can take part in one of 4 different demo offerings, while supplies last. (click here to see if a Walmart near you is participating!)

The Miracles of Jesus (Book Review)

I've been reading a new book by Eric D. Huntsman called The Miracles of Jesus, published by Deseret Book. It's another gorgeous full-colour, hardcover book laid out with tons of beautiful visuals including artwork, maps, charts, and photographs.

Huntsman is an associate professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. He organizes this study of Jesus' miracles into 5 categories: Power over the Elements, Healing the Sick, Casting Out Devils, Raising the Dead, and Causing the Blind to See and the Deaf to Hear. Each section outlines numerous miracles and refers to the record of those events recorded in scripture.

The stories of these miracles are explained clearly and in light of historical background and situations. Then they are applied to us, to our present day and the difficulties we face. It's easier to see how we can compare these experiences of the past to the situations and challenges we face and those around us are facing currently.

One thing I liked about the book was how it talked not only about what physically happened, but how that can represent other, more spiritual miracles. Here's a quote from the concluding section of the book:

"What manner of man, then is this Jesus?... His great acts of healing remind us that he came to heal our hearts and souls as well as our physical bodies, forgiving our sins and strengthening us to do good and enabling us to endure in faith... Restoring sight and hearing reflects Jesus' ability to open our spiritual eyes and ears, helping us learn to recognize truth, especially the truth about himself and his mission... raising the dead points our minds forward to the universal resurrection when Christ will fully and completely defeat death and erase the sorrow of loss..."

That quote is only a small part of the conclusions Huntsman makes in his book, but it gives you an idea of the aim of the book. There are also a couple of appendixes included. One shares a personal experience from the author and one is a survey of the biblical scholarship behind the book. It includes lists of every miracle story, summary, and report in the Gospels, the different approaches each of the four Gospels takes to the miracles, and reviews how scholars evaluate the stories historically.

Reading a book like this always opens my eyes to how much is to be gained from studying the scriptures more thoroughly, spending more time reading, studying, and really pondering the scriptures. I always enjoy doing so, but it is easy to get out of the habit of doing it. I'm grateful for books like this that inspire me to want to learn more!

It Is Better to Look Up (Book Review)

For our family, this weekend is being spent listening to our church's semi-annual General Conference. It's a favourite time for me because I love to hear the encouraging spiritual messages that are shared with us by our church leaders.

One of my favourite things about the talks given at conference are the stories shared. I love the way that they help me to visualize and to apply gospel teachings. The talks given at every General Conference are recorded and an archive of them from 1971 and later are available to read or watch or listen to online.

Deseret Book has recently published a book called It Is Better to Look Up: Life Experiences Shared From the Pulpit that features stories from past and present members of the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Quorum of the Seventy, presiding bishopric, general Relief Society presidency, general Young Women presidency, and general Primary presidency..

It is a nice collection of inspirational stories and beautiful photography. There is also a scripture to go along with each story's message.

I love the layout of the book, with beautiful borders, photography, and sprawling quotes over the beautiful images. This hardcover book would be a beautiful one to display or have sitting out in the living room.

This book is the same size and style as Consider the Blessings (a collection of stories shared by our prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, that I shared here about a year ago.

Royalty proceeds from this book will benefit the Church's General Missionary Fund.

October 2014 Sharing Time - Week 1

Wednesday afternoon I felt like my computer was being sluggish, so I restarted it, hoping that would help. When I tried to restart it, it wouldn't! (Enter terror of a repeat of the time our hard drive died and I lost a ton of precious photos!!) So, Thursday I couldn't do much with the blog, but we managed to get it into "safe mode" so I could transfer some photos and get them ready for Friday's post (you'll notice they're not my usual editing with curved corners, etc. because I don't have photoshop on my laptop). JORD Wood Watch Review & #Giveaway

I recently heard about a watch company called JORD that makes all Wood Watches!  They have some really neat designs that I like because they're unique.  The watch that I've been "using" is a little too tight, but I don't want to make it looser because then it's too loose!  So, even though I like the way it looks, it spends a good 95% of the time in a drawer in my jewellery box!

When I got an email from JORD asking if I'd like to try one of their watches and share it with you I said "Yes please!"  I chose the Ely watch in maple and I'm so happy with it!

It came in the mail packaged inside of this lovely box (below), with a wooden tag attached to it (shown in the photo above).

We had some trouble getting the pins out of one side of the watch band.  I contacted the company and they quickly solved the problem by sending me a replacement watch band for the side that had the problem.  As soon as that arrived, I was able to easily get it sized properly.  I so appreciate good customer service like that!

This is a clunkier watch than I'm used to and I'm really liking it!  My other watch is more "dressy" so I love having a casual everyday watch (plus this one fits better than my other one).  I also really like that it has the day of the week on the watch face- that comes in so handy for me because I'm always losing track of the date!  (Excellent for those sheepish moments when you have to sign your child in at school or fill out and sign some paperwork at an appointment and you realize you don't know the date).
