5 Ways to Fight the Winter Blahs

I love so much of winter, but I sure wish it weren't so long! The snow is so beautiful at first, then the plows and the salt get going and soon the fresh blankets of white turn to slushy, refrozen brownishness everywhere! The cold gets really old, really fast for me; and since we're on the topic of winter blahs, I'll share my least favourite thing about winter: grey skies. How I miss sunny, blue skies!

How to Stay Happy during the Winter by www.RaisingMemories.com

Now that the holidays are over and once the excitement of the fresh new year begins to fade, it's easy to start feeling the blahs. The extremely cold temperatures we've been having have really made us want to hibernate which can start to leave us feeling really low on energy and enthusiasm. So, here are a few things we like to do around here to uplift ourselves and keep the blahs away:

How to Fight the Winter Blahs and Stay Happy during Winter!

Find Fun Things To Do Outside

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! We may not have sunny skies, but snow can be a lot of fun! Whether you're up for something adventurous like a ski trip, or you want a small outing like sledding, skating or playing hockey for part of the day, there are lots of fun things to do out in the community!  If you need something smaller or closer to home, head out in the backyard to build a snowman or snow fort! If you don't have enough snow in your yard, you can head to the neighbourhood park and use their snow! This winter, Katrina has been totally enthused about shoveling our driveway.. you just never know what they'll think is fun!

Keep Up On Your Vitamins

Without those sunny skies, we especially need to keep up on our vitamins. We're always being reminded to take Vitamin D during the winter and I'd rather not wonder if we're leaving gaps in our family's overall nutrition with missing vitamins and minerals, so we've started taking multivitamins regularly.  My kids love taking vitamins when they taste good- they're like candies! FLINSTONES Active Kids Gummies are our current favourite for them. I'm a big fan of gummy vitamins for grown ups too because they make me way more likely to take them! I'm just a big kid at heart anyway, so I'm using One a Day Gummies for me.

Turn Up the Music and the Energy Level

A tried and true method for changing the mood in our home is music. If I want my kids to calm down and play nicely with each other (but that's not exactly happening), I have a go-to instrumental CD that's like magic! My girls have become big fans of my old Shania Twain CD and they'll often turn it on and up, and start dancing around the house like crazy. I admit this one gets me going too, and they've seen me dance like no one in public ever has (or ever will)! Another favourite of theirs lately is the My Little Pony movie soundtrack- it's totally peppy, makes me think of some of my favourite musicals, and has a bunch of positive messages woven through it!

Keep Cold Symptoms at Bay

You know how it goes when the weather turns colder, it feels like everywhere you look there's someone coughing or sneezing! While it may be impossible to keep colds away for the whole winter, I'm happy to do whatever I can to keep any symptoms under control! If I feel a sore throat coming on, I'll drink my favourite herbal tea with honey to soothe it. When the weather got really cold, the air in our home got super dry and we started dealing with stuffy noses and dry nasal passages (to the point of frequent nose bleeds for one of our girls). Not fun! Last year we discovered nasal rinses and although it seemed like a weird idea at first, I can't imagine dealing with a cold without them now! Even just on a day when my nose seems stuffy and won't clear itself, I use a nasal rinse and I'm immediately all clear again. If you've never tried them, I highly recommend it! It might take a couple of tries before you get used to it, but it's amazing! One to try is hydraSense Daily Nasal Care.

Go Ahead and Hibernate... Creatively!

If playing outside doesn't sound like fun to you, find something fun to do inside! Try one of our usual indoor fun ideas like reading a book, playing a board game, watching a movie, or do something out of the ordinary by finding creative ways to bring outdoor activities indoors! A few other favourites are baking, crafting, and pulling out the toys or kits that don't get played with very often. We've also had fun adding new twists to classic games.

  1. This is a great post because it something that happens to me every winter. I'm all about vitamins and getting outdoors to do fun things with my kids.

    1. Thanks Maya :) Yep, kids have a way of making me love the outdoors more than I probably would without them when the weather's cold!

  2. One of ky kids also loves to shovel. She has SPD though so the physical muscle pressure, exercise of lifting and shoving the snow aside is super therapeutic for her. I am sure there's a bit of that which is true for many of us with shovelling. I find movement helps me. I go skiing or I go to the gym and that always brings me better health and energy which helps. Hydra sense is a good product. My teen uses it.

    1. That's true. Sometimes I get right into it (and then I pay for it with sore muscles the next day! ;)

  3. I try to be active but I hate the cold!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment- I love reading them! :)
