Our Quest for Seasonal Allergy Relief

I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser. #CollectiveBias

I suffer from a very annoying seasonal allergy. It never fails: Spring enters (my favourite season!), I'm feeling blissful about the warmer temperatures, the disappearance of snow, and the reappearance of all things green and colourful... then they hit. The runny nose, the sneezing, the itchy eyes... oh, the itchy eyes! I want to CLAW my eyes out!! I am NOT exaggerating. That's really how I feel!

I can't wear make-up because it might aggravate things and I CANNOT resist the urge to rub my eyes. I cannot avoid this reaction because we use window air conditioners and open windows to keep our home cool, so anything that's outside inevitably ends up INside. It's terrible.

Allergy relief is a necessity for me!  Over the years I have tried many over-the-counter solutions for myself (some that helped, some that did not).  Finally things escalated one year and I went to my doctor, got an allergy test, and we decided that a prescription was necessary to allow me to feel normal again!  It was like heaven when it started to work!

Allergies have caused me much misery so you can imagine my sadness when Talia started to show the exact same signs of allergy that I do. My poor girl!  We took her to the doctor who suggested we try some over-the-counter solutions before turning to a prescription for her.  So, that's what we're doing!

I do not want us to experience another Spring like this:

In misery, indoors.

Last year we tried an over-the-counter allergy medicine for Talia and it didn't work for her. I'm not backing down though, because I know from my own experience that some worked better for me than others. This year we are ready to try something new. If it doesn't work, we will keep on trying until we find her some relief!

So, we headed off to Target to explore their pharmacy area to see what they had to offer.

#shop

We found a lot of different allergy medications and even a few that catered specifically to children (right in with their cough and cold medicines). We found one that's homoeopathic (something we definitely haven't tried before), so we picked it up and we're giving it a whirl!

#shop

It's a liquid medication that's easy for her to take quickly in the morning.

And we're hoping for a lot more of this, this season!

Happy, Outside, Feeling Great!

Because that's what Spring is for, isn't it?! Hopefully we've got those allergies out of our way and we're ready to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather! (when the rain stops ;)

The Saratov Approach

One of the things most people know about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that we have missionaries. They go throughout the world, sharing the gospel with people. In our church, young men and women who choose to serve missions leave their home for 1.5-2 years and focus completely on missionary work for that time. It's a huge commitment and I have seen the ways that missions bless lives (both the lives of the people the missionaries teach, and the life of the person who has served the mission).

Many of my family members have served missions (my father went to England, my brother to California, Ken to Mexico, my father in law to Japan, my cousin to Italy, my brother in law to Ukraine, my sister in law to Ecuador, and our favourite babysitter is currently serving in Chile). I love to hear people reminisce about their missions; of the lessons they learned, the ways they grew, and the many stories of lives they were able to touch.

When I heard about a new movie coming out called The Saratov Approach, which tells the true story of two missionaries who were abducted in Russia 15 years ago, I was very curious about the story.

I found the movie to be very well made, the story compelling, and the message inspiring.  It's the kind of story that would be of interest to anyone- whether they are a member of the church or not.

I cried as I imagined how it would feel to be the family of the missionaries during this time.  I was inspired by the way the missionaries handled their fear with their faith, and by the way they were able to affect the lives of others in a positive way, even in these circumstances.  An amazing story, a good movie, and I would recommend it to others!

Disclosure: I was given a copy of the movie by the publisher (Cedar Fort), for review purposes.
All opinions shared are my own, as always.

Thoughts: Being Happy Where You Are

I've been thinking a lot about being happy with where you are. Not just where you are as in location, but the stage of life you're in.

A little background information: When Ken and I got married we were both 21 years old. We were both working on our bachelors degrees at University. We each graduated. I stayed home with our baby girl. He went on to do his Masters degree. He defended his Masters shortly after baby girl #2 came along. Then began work on his PhD.

Often over the years we have been married, people have asked me if I am excited for when he will finish school. They remark how I must be sick of living "the student life". I never really felt that way though. It was just the way married life had always been for us, so I felt like I didn't really know what it would be like to be done school; I just knew that things were fine the way they were and we'd see what that was like when we got there.

About a year ago, we started to plan for Ken to graduate with his PhD. We thought he would graduate and we would move somewhere (probably out of the country) for him to either get a job working for a company, in research, or to start post doctoral research at a University. We expected to be in a new home in time for the girls to start school in August/September of 2013.

As this time approached, I started to let myself imagine what it would be like to move on to the next stage of our life. I started to think about perhaps owning a home, having more space, maybe having a second car. I dreamed of possibly living somewhere that would stay warm all year, I wondered if it would help my health. I got excited about this next step and started to look forward to all of the possible positives that would come with it!

Things kept taking longer than expected with Ken's research. Soon we were starting another school year at the same public school and projecting that Ken would be finished school by Christmas. Then I found out my local sister was expecting a baby in March and was sad that we had lived near each other for so long and then finally when she would have a baby, I would be far away from her! So, when Ken's approximate finish date was pushed later, I didn't mind too much because it would mean being there for this niece's birth. The approximate finish time was moved to April/May. Then moved again and currently we're looking at July at the earliest.

Over this past year as our plans and expectations have changed so many times, I've learned that thinking about the things that could be better in the future can make you feel like things in the present are not good enough.

I have had to really focus on where I'm letting my thoughts go, and on the way that I look at things in my life. I have realized (more deeply) some things that I had already realized on a more superficial level: Happiness is right here.   Happiness is right now.  I don't need a bigger/newer/nicer house to be happy. I don't need more money/things/time to be happy.

It may sound cliche, but I guess that's because it's true.

I've started to watch myself and if I catch myself feeling disappointed with my current life, I stop and ask myself why. Because it always seems to be either because of something that I can change or because I'm putting my current life down by comparing it to what I think my future life will be like or to someone else's current life. You know that saying about not comparing your worst to someone else's best? There's also one about not comparing your beginning to someone else's middle. It's kind of similar to that.

Yesterday I was organizing some files on my computer and I came across some videos from when Talia was Katrina's age.  I look back on that time with such fondness!  These childhoods go by so quickly- I can feel time slipping past!  I don't ever want to look back on a stage of life and wish I had enjoyed it more, or been more present, or realized what I had.  So, I'm committing to trying to remember to be happy right now, right here.  To enjoy THIS moment.  It's the moment that's here.

The Idea Room

Our Summer Bucket List and a Shutterfly Giveaway with #KFCBucketList

Every Year, I make a Summer Bucket List, with ideas (big and small) for things we want to do during the 2 months that the kids aren't in school. It's great for making sure we fit in some memorable activities, and for giving me ideas on those days when we wake up needing something fun to do. I make sure to include plenty of things that are easy to do, even if you haven't really planned for them!

I have just started to compile our 2014 Summer Bucket List, and here are some of the things on it:

1. Start the Summer off on the last day of school by having a Welcome to Summer! party in our backyard.

2. Participate in our Library's Summer Reading Program

3. Have Water Gun Target Practice in our backyard.

4. Camp in our backyard (the girls have been wanting to go camping since we went once as a family, but Ken can't bring himself to do it again haha.. maybe this is a good compromise ;)

5. Make Apple Marshmallow Smile Treats (something Katrina has remembered ever since we did it, and every now and then she asks about them- I need to get some marshmallows & make this happen again!

6. Pick Strawberries (something I remember doing as a child- I want to find a place to go and make it happen this year)

7. Have a water fight on a hot day, with water sponge bombs or water balloons.

8. There's a park that plays movies on a big screen outside and you can bring your picnic blanket or lawn chairs and watch it for free. It's so fun! We went last year and I would love to go again this year.

9. Roast marshmallows at Ken's parents' house. I always think this is fun & the kids love it!

10. I want to try making roads for toy cars either indoors with masking tape or outdoors with sidewalk chalk- I've seen photos of this idea and I think the girls would love to create a little city!

11. The girls always have a blast helping dad wash the car, so that's something that's on our bucket list every year!

12. Last year we went to meet Daddy during his lunchtime and headed to a nearby park for a picnic. It was so nice! As you can see in the picture, the ducks joined us ;)

13. Last year's Summer Schedule worked really well, so I'm planning to use that again, to keep our more regular days (or at least the beginning of them) organized!

14. We try to go to the Palmyra Pageant every year (a tradition Ken's family had when he was growing up, and my family went a lot of years, too). We have traditional places that we visit each time we go, AND Ken proposed to me on one of those trips, so it's a special place for us! We've already got a hotel room booked, and we're excited!

15. There are lots of other things like going to the farmer's market, the splash park, flying a kite, using skipping ropes, riding bikes & scooters, going for walks, etc. that we will also do, and I've started a Summer Bucket List Pinterest Board to add more ideas to. I'm getting excited!
