The Sacrament (A Children's Book by John Bytheway)

Some of the book reviews I share on this blog are religious. This one is very much "Mormon" (it applies specifically to the sacrament that happens weekly in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). It's called The Sacrament by John Bytheway, illustrated by Nathan Pinnock, and published by Deseret Book.

I've mentioned John Bytheway before on the blog, a couple of times. (My husband & I are big fans ;)

I recently shared some children's books that focus on baptism. Along with learning about baptism, it is important to teach our children about the Gift of the Holy Ghost, about repentance, and about the sacrament. They are all connected.

So, I was excited when I heard that John Bytheway was coming out with this book. When I started reading it to the girls, right away my husband asked if the book was based on a poem that we have heard Bytheway share in the past, and sure enough, the book is full of rhymes and is really a long poem, inspired by a short poem by Walter M. Horned.

The book focuses on what we should be thinking about (and not be thinking about) during the sacrament, and what it can do for all of us. I love Nathan Pinnock's artwork and I love the way he so clearly and thoughtfully illustrates the story and the meaning behind it, in his artwork.

My kids got excited as soon as they realized it was "a rhyming book", and their eyes were glued to the pictures as we talked about the different things we could see happening in them. I know we'll read this one again and again! I can see that there is the potential for them to learn a lot from it and I am excited about it!

Disclosure: A copy of the book was provided to me by Deseret Book for review purposes. All opinions expressed are of course mine.

True Meaning of Easter FHE (Family Home Evening)

Last night we had a great little "Family Home Evening" where we learned about Easter!

I'll share what we did in this post (it's similar to what I shared yesterday, but different ;)

Preparation:

- I got together with my sister in law a couple of weeks ago and we prepared this Easter countdown. (we didn't use it as a countdown this year though)

- I hid the eggs throughout the living room and asked the girls to bring their Easter baskets to FHE

Song:

We sang "Did Jesus Really Live Again" (Katrina didn't know the song, so we learned the words and talked about what they meant before singing it. We also sang the song before bed at night, so that helped her to remember what we had discussed)

Lesson/Activity:

I gave the girls this handout (crossed out "yard" and wrote "living room")

Then the girls ran around collecting eggs. We sat down in a circle on the floor and discussed each item in the eggs. I knew that the meaning was getting through to Katrina when she said our closing prayer and thoughtfully thanked Heavenly Father that Jesus could die for us, and that we could be with our families in Heaven forever, and told Him that she was sorry that Jesus had to do hard things like that.

:) It was a success! :)

Album Review (Classic: The Rock Album) by Jenny Oaks Baker

I recently had the opportunity to listen to Jenny Oaks Baker's new CD, Classic: The Rock Album, from Shadow Mountain Records.

I love violin music and I love Jenny Oaks Baker's music! She is a Grammy-nominated #1 Billboard Violinist who I have had the pleasure of listening to in person at a Time Out For Women confernece. Her talent is amazing! Watching her play had me mesmerized!

This CD is kind of amazing. It's so neat to hear these rock songs played by a violin. It is beautiful! Baker has such talent, strength, and control of her instrument. I love the way the music can go from calm and flowing to strong, and loud. It feels like the music just sucks me in- I could close my eyes and sway as it calmly brings me along only to have my eyes pop open and heart start pumping as the music changes to something strong and controlling.

Here's a list of the songs on the CD:

Kashmir/Four Season (Led Zepplin/Vivaldi)
Everybody Hurts (REM)
Sweet Child of Mine (Guns and Roses)
Liverpool Suite
Pinball Wizard (The Who)
Imagine (John Lennon)
Stairway to Heaven (Led Zepplin)
Let it Be, Eleanor Rigby, Yesturday, All you Need is Love, Hey Jude (The Beatles)
Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon and Garfundel)
Fields of Gold (Sting)
Clocks (Coldplay)

You can listen to parts of the songs here.

Disclosure: Deseret Book sent me a copy of this CD for review purposes. All opinions shared here are my own.
