I've always thought it would be fun to make our own rimming sugar when we want to have a special drink. When the girls decided they wanted to have Disney Frozen themed birthday parties I thought it would be fun to have a blue drink and rim the glasses with sugar for an icy look. Around that same time we were putting together a gift for my mother-in-law who loves Piña Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris, so we set out to figure out how to make our own coloured and flavoured rimming sugar as well!
Rimming Sugar Recipe |
What kind of sugar do you use to rim a glass?
To Make Regular White Rimming Sugar, all you really need is white sugar and a citrus fruit!
- White Sugar
- Liquid Food Colouring
- Flavouring Oils (we found ours at Michaels)
- Ziplock Sandwich Bag
Put half a cup of sugar with 2 drops of flavour and 1 drop of food colouring in a Ziplock sandwich bag and shake it up for a while. You can adjust the flavour to your preference by adding one extra drop of flavouring or adding a bit more sugar to get the balance you like. Continue to add 1 drop of food colouring until you get the colour you want.
We found a shallow, round tin at a store called Solutions (similar to the Container Store) that was the perfect size to gift our rimming sugar in (and practical for rimming glasses).
1. Use an orange or lemon or lime slice. Cut it and glide it around the rim to make the rim wet.
2. Dip your glass upside down into a container with your sugar in it.

Can you sugar rim a plastic cup?
You sure can! We used plastic glasses for our party which worked just fine!
3. Set your glasses aside to dry & harden, and you're finished!
These were a BIG hit at our Frozen Birthday Parties! It was comical to hear all of the kids gnawing on their cups to get as much sugar as possible off of them ;)
This was so easy to do, that I am sure we will do it again!
